Only after the last tree has been cut down.  Only after the last river has been poisoned.  Only after the last fish has been caught.  Only then will you find that money cannot be eaten.

"When an activity raises threats of harm to human health or the environment, precautionary measures should be taken even if some cause and effect relationships are not fully established scientifically. In this context the proponent of an activity, rather than the public, should bear the burden of proof." - Wingspread Statement of the Precautionary Principle.

About Us

At a meeting held in Archerwill on April 9, 2003 we learned that North East Hogs/Big Sky Farms Inc. is proposing to establish a 5000-sow mega hog operation somewhere in the Tisdale/Archerwill area.  Since then, we understand that the company has carried out water and soil testing in the region, looking for suitable sites for this 5-barn operation.

STOP the HOGS Coalition is a group of concerned ratepayers of the RMs of Barrier Valley and Ponass Lake that are opposed to this proposal.  Because of our grave concerns about the environmental and social implications of the 'factory' production of hogs, we believe this would be a very dangerous and unwise decision.  The only hope we have of stopping this project is now, before the barns are built.  Once they are built and in operation, it is too late.

For your information, we are posting an RM map with red coloured squares indicating opposition to the hog barn development.  Please note that due to land changing hands and being sold and purchased, this map can not be considered 100% accurate, however, to the best of our knowledge and information it is complete.

Clicking on this map will open up a much larger view in a new window.

Even though the September 1, 2003 deadline is passed, you can still (if you are eligible) print off the Petition, sign it, forward it to us and we will take it to the RM to be added to the others.  Every signature reinforces the message to the RM that we are opposed to the pig factories proposed for our community and want a vote to settle this matter.
